Go check out wikipedia today (Jan 18) . Nearly all of it's content has been blacked out in protest of SOPA, a bill which would do great harm to internet freedom of speech. As an artist, I care about copyright infringement, but I don't think this is the answer. This bill is not well thought through and could have unintended consequences. Imagine YOUR blog being shut down because someone else posted restricted material on blogger! Under this bill it could happen! If you don't want to see this bill pass please write your congressmen and senators and tell them NOT to vote yes on this bill. Learn more here.

Scribbleprints Year in Review

Thought I'd take some time to look over this year and plan for next.

It's been a busy and emotional year offline--coming to term with my Dad's Parkinsons as he enters the last stages of that disease has been a big part of that, then the usual school and church stuff, seasonal colds, holidays, etc.

2011 also saw a lot of computer "issues." We got a drobo to back-up our data, put everything on it, then it took forever for me to figure out how to get things back OFF of it. Went for months not being able to get at all my images. Then later in the year I spilled tea on my laptop, and because we were broke then and like the more expensive ergonomic keyboards there was a month I was without my home computer (just had my husband's laptop when he was home and not using it).

Before all that happened I a couple goals for Scribbleprints...

Focus less on my shop and more on my family
Focus less on promoting and more on new designs.

The first I did, though I still think I need to do more. The second...well, not so much. I finished one design...my Texas Scribbleprint:

I did finish the drawing of a Christmas wreath, but computer problems kept me from getting it online in time to edit it. Here it is in black and white...expect it some time before NEXT Christmas. I'll be turning it green and adding red "berries."

And I started a few more art projects but didn't finish them.

But man, CafePress and Zazzle kept me busy anyways! CafePress added 36 products and Zazzle added 25...I haven't finished adding all of them to my shops yet, and haven't announced many of the ones I have added. I plan to fix that this month, sharing about a few new products every day.

The other thing that kept me busy was Zazzle's tagging changes. I've been trying to re-do my tags and still haven't finished with that either. It's a HUGE chore when you have hundreds of products and have to go in and manually change the tags on each of them! But without correct tags, they won't be found in the marketplace, which is where I make most of my sales.

Speaking of sales, I did VERY well at Zazzle this year. Made more sales then last year nearly every month, and December sold a HUGE amount of ornaments. So happy about that! My CafePress shop sales dwindled though. The year started pretty good...fueled by the marketplace bump I got when my <A HREF="http://scribbleprints.blogspot.com/2010/11/heart-scribble-water-bottle-on-sale-for.html">Heart Water Bottle</A> was featured on a CafePress special sale late in 2010...but dwindled down to nearly nothing and didn't even pick up during the holidays. Sold over 100 items in December at Zazzle, but sold a whopping FOUR items at CafePress the same month.

Free Thankgiving Printable

Looking for something for the kids to do while waiting for Thanksgiving turkey? How about printing out one of my fun free fall coloring pages? Now doesn't that look fun to color? And they aren't just for kids! Grown-ups can have fun coloring too!

I also have one sectioned into smaller cut-apart boxes which you could cut apart and put next to each plate at the kids table for the to color after dinner.

(For non-commercial, personal use only.)

After you've cut it into pieces (I suggest a paper cutter if you have one) here's a couple fun ideas.:

Take a couple crayons and a small rubber band (like the little ones used for hair-braids), then wrap each coloring paper you just cut out around the crayons and secure with the rubber band.
Or, cut out a piece of cardboard slightly larger than the picture (old cereal boxes work good for this), and using a glue stick glue a single leaf picture on the front. This gives the kiddos a solid surface to draw on. Put these in a plastic or cello wrap baggie with crayons OR use a hole punch to make a hole, tie a ribbon to it, and tie a crayon or colored pencil on the other end.

Wha-la! A fun thanksgiving activity for the kids that costs next to nothing!

TIPS

You can add extra pictures to the inside of the card too by clicking "Customize" and "add images." You can also add extra text to all sides of the card and even the back (if you want to write a long holiday message).

Want to send a Hanukkah greeting in stead? You can change "Season's Greetings" to "Happy Hanukkah" on the card to the right (though you will still have the tree). You can't remove graphics from these cards without removing ALL of the graphics/backgrounds/etc...but then, that is another option. You can always click customize and remove the graphics (click the X next to them), and either add your own or just fill the space with a picture and text. You can also add graphics/text to any card. Under the "pictures" section of Zazzle fonts in the images font section, the second one down (with the holiday graphics) has a few Jewish symbols, including a Menorah (capitol letter O) and a Star of David (capitol letter L).

NOTE: None of the military templates pictured here are my own designs. Just wanted to clarify that so no one thought I was taking credit where it wasn't due.

Finally, Art on Our Walls!

Our walls have been empty since we bought our home two years ago. Not one picture hanging up. Nothing on them but paint. Until now...

No, I didn't do this myself. We used stencils. We knew from the start we wanted some sort of botanic silhouette...at first we thought maybe bamboo. But we just couldn't decide. Had looked at hundreds of stencils and wall stickers and couldn't find one we agreed on. My husband and I are picky...REALLY picky about how we decorate. I like really delicate, detailed, usually natural or ethnic designs. My husband likes simple, sparse, and modern. And since we agreed not to bring anything decorative into the house without both of us agreeing on it...well, a lot of our home remains un-decorated (in spite of me being an artist and all).

But when we saw this stencil set we both loved it. Still, it took me several months to actually buy it, then it sat for 6 months before we got the living room clean enough to do painting (yes, I'm THAT kind of "housekeeper").

So, I'm really excited about this! Had to share it with you all! Think it came out really good! There were three large stencils (plus some falling leaves, which we might add later, and some butterflies they added for free, which I might use for crafts). But what's great about this design is you can do a lot to alter those three starting stencils--put one branch on another branch, remove or move around leaves, reverse the image, etc. So we were able to do a lot with it.

I'd like to share a new design with you....a Texas Scribbleprint!

I was born in California, but have been living in Texas for a few years now. This design actually came from a special request by my mom, who's living in Texas now too. She didn't request JUST a Texas Scribbleprints...but a "I Survived the 2011 Texas Heat Wave" Scribbleprints. See, this summer has been the hottest I've seen in the 10+ years I've lived here...and Texas summers are usually hot. But this one didn't let up...a long stretch of 100+ degree heat, sometimes rising to the teens (I think it got up to 118), that just did not end. Well, until now. October is finally giving us some rain and cooler weather.

Shop Hop Saturday

Hello! I've been meaning to join this shop hop for a while, and finally am! To introduce myself, I'm an artist who sells through CafePress and Zazzle (print on demand shops where you can sell your art on printed product for free). You can see some of what I sell in the side-bar...and I have some really good coupons now (50% off coupon for cards and invitations, 35% off Canvas prints and more...which you can find by clicking here.

But the real reason I started today because I really feel like talking about some business issues I'm experiencing, and I thought the shop hop would be a good chance to share with some other sellers who maybe can relate.

Both Zazzle and CafePress offer shops where you can present your own product to customers, and a marketplace where customers can shop all the products of all the shopkeepers who sell there. I've been with both both these for some time now, and have seen head in different directions. Starting in 2008 CafePress made a series of changes that were bad for shopkeepers.

They first became more vigilant about restricting links from their sites to any other POD (print on demand) sites (oh, maybe they always did that).
They changed their volumn bonus system so that marketplace sales didn't count towards the amount you had to earn to get a bonus (and lowered the amount you had to get to get a bonus...that at least was nice).
They removed all the links to shopkeepers private shops in the marketplace, and made it so that THEY chose what products showed up in the marketplace (shopkeepers could opt all their products out, but CafePress choose to take some products out).
They removed all the shopkeepers product descriptions from their marketplace.
Worst of all for most shopkeepers, they changed their marketplace structure so that they had control of prices, not their shopkeepers (though shopkeepers could still set their own prices in their shops), setting all the CafePress marketplace prices at the same set price and giving shopkeepers a flat 10% of marketplace sales. This put some shopkeepers (like me) in a place where marketplace customers were paying more for yourmany of your products, but you were getting less for them.
Sales on marketplace products stopped applying to shops, and thought they eventually did start offering shop sales again, they were piddly ($3 off of $40 sales and such, compared to 20% off and Buy one Get One Free and such in the marketplace).

Meanwhile, Zazzle did so many things to improve their marketplace for their shopkeepers, getting rid of nearly all the complaints people had about their program and adding so many other great improvements.

Zazzle used to only let people have a flat 10% commission on all their sales, and not long before CafePress' changes, they changed that so YOU could set the percentage you got (with a price increase for higher percentages).
They used to not allow much customization of shops and they added complete customization options.
They added the ability for customers to customize products.
They added a volumn bonus program with a minimul volumn just as low as CafePress', but that counted not only all your sales (from marketplace and shop), but also your affiliate sales (but not sales from your shop referred by others).
They've started randomly giving shopkeepers $10 off $10 purchase coupons.
Just recently, adding a Zazzle black program which allows customers to pay a yearly fee and get free shipping, taking care of their high shipping for multiple items problem.

Those changes added to some of their other already wonderful features (like customer comments, favorites, fan clubs, the ability to move images around on your products however you want, and frequent sales).

But now, I'm seeing the reverse possibly start to happen. In the past year CafePress has been making some very positive changes:

More shop sales (even if they're still piddly).
Lots of giveaways on blogs
They made an easy way to make your shop products match the marketplace (which I just realized can work for individual products...so I'm going to start changing the few products that are generally lower in the marketplace to match that!)
They've added the ability to move and resize your images on products (thought I still haven't figured it out...it either doesn't work on my browsers or it's just not intuitive).
The ability to offer product customers can customize (good, but again, not intuitive...or maybe its just my browser).
Changing their premium shop pricing sow you can choose a montly fee, or have them just take 10% not to exceed $10. (Which means I might be moving to a premium shop soon, in stead of the gobs of basic shops linked from GalesGiggles.com

Then, this month, I started noticing bad changes in Zazzle.

Before, there was a link under each product in the marketplace which showed who made it, and when you clicked on it, it took you to their shop. Now, when you click it shows your products, but doesn't take them to your shop. I don't like this as it makes it harder for customers to join your fan club (only linked through your shop), and see your bio (where you can include outside links), and such.

They just made us limit our tags to 40, and only the first 10 of those will be used in marketplace searches (though I'm not certain of that, because it seems like some of my later tags still work). I'm mixed on this, because it does seem to make the marketplace searches work better...but it's a pain to go in and change all of those. They didn't give us enough time before the change happened, and I'm still not even half way done. It would have been nice if they had implemented some sort of way to change tags in bulk (not go into each product to change them, like we have to do now) when they did this.

They also limited us to only one category...which I think is a big mistake. So many products can easily fit into two categories. If they thought too many people were putting their products in the wrong category, they should have dealt with this some other way. Perhaps just make all secondary category listings come after people who had listed that as a first category.

While the Zazzle changes aren't TERRIBLE...I really hope this doesn't mean that they are heading down the same trail that CafePress did in 2008. What concerns me most is the separation of the shops from the marketplace, because that was the pre-curser to CafePress's changes back when. But, I'm hopeful that CafePress might be becoming more shopkeeper friendly again.

My mom suggested a Texas design (for this hot Texas summer) that I'm gonna try to knock out this weekend.
And, I'm thinking about adding some photography...though I'm not half as good as some people I have a few shots I think might be worth putting on cards or something. I have some of flowers on a mountainside I'm considering using, and I'm really considering doing something with some of my bug shots (which you can take a look at now on Texifornia). But, then, I'm wondering...is there a market for cards and mmousepads and such with a big bug on them? I'm not much of a bug fan myself, but I think some of those caterpiller ones are actually cute (not to mention that the coloring on those critters is amazing) and I actually think the spider one is pretty though I don't know if I would personally want it on anything!

Unfortunately, this will all be on hold for a little while while I re-do my tags on Zazzle. They are reducing the number of tags that show up on a search to 10. What a bother!

I subscribe to Dover's Free Sample E-mail. They have two free coloring pages this week based off of famous artworks; one by Georges Seurat, and another by Van Gogh. Click here to see both and download them if you want to. (Their samples are usually only availble for a month or two...so even if you want to use them later you might want to save them now.

I think these would be a great way to teach kids a little bit about art. I think I'm going to tell my kids about the artists who made these but not show them the paintings in color until AFTER they've had a chance to color these themselves. It might be fun to discuss the colors they used, versus the colors the original artist used (though I want to make sure they don't think they colored it "wrong" because they didn't do it like the artist did).

Dover also has some fun space coloring pages and space shuttle airplanes, and some monster coloring pages this week (plus some tattoo art and ironwork). You can see all in their sampler here. If you'ld like some coloring pages from a much less famous artist (me), you can find some of those here.

New Year's Tax Resolutions

I just finished Taxes...and this small business/not quite a business of mine did not make them easier. All the hassles left me with some new tax year's resolutions to try to make things easier for myself next year. Here's ten things I plan to do differently (or better).

1. Keep better track of the of items I give away (I can count them as advertising cost).

2. Keep better track of the items I won in giveaways, which are supposed to be reported.

3. NOT use my income from sales in my Zazzle account to buy things from Zazzle. I had to go through every order I made and figure out how much I had spent that hadn't been included in the payments they sent me so I could get my total income. BIG PAIN!

4. Keep track of other stuff I buy for business (like packaging material for mailing giveaway items, or printing for files).

5. Keep all my business related reciepts in a folder where I can find them easily.

6. Learn how to use a spreadsheet to record and calculate all this junk.

7. Still keep a paper record because computers can crash and burn sometimes.

8. Get a new notebook with tabs for my paper records (DONE!).

9. Start earlier! Don't wait til the last minute to fill those tax forms out!

10. Write my congressman about making it easier to report income that doesn't show up on your W2s (like babysitting, mowing lawns, Zazzle and Ebay income, etc.) On the IRS website on this subject, they complain about revenues lost when people don't report money from these small side jobs--but just figuring out how to report it is a major chore (I wrote a little guide here). Since there's no paper trail on most of these, and they're asking us to report them on the honor system...the least they can do is make it simpler (IMHO)!

So, after finishing taxes this year...is there anything you plan to change to make it easier next year?

I'm an artist and this blog is mainly about my art and the products I sell through Zazzle and CafePress. Zazzle and CafePress are both print on demand shops where people can buy products like posters and t-shirts and cards printed with artist designs. Nothing is printed until someone buys it, which makes it free for artists to sell their work there.

My artwork mainly falls mainly into a couple categories:

My littlest likes to paint, and I've been trying to teach him the pattern: water, paint, paper...water, paint, paper. He getting it down, and the water colors are surviving longer without turning to brown. But every two year old forgets now and then, and one such moment resulted in the tiny green heart in the yellow paint above, which I caught for Guest Heart Thursday.

St. Patrick's Day Blessings - A Blog Journey (with linky)

While St. Patrick's Day has become largely secularized over the years, it began as a religious holiday celebrating the life of St. Patrick. Until a few years ago, I didn't know ANYTHING about St. Patrick, except that there was a holiday named after him. In the last few years I've learned more about his story, and it's both fascinating and inspiring. St. Patrick was kidnapped as a teen by marauders and sold in Ireland as a slave, then escaped, become a monk, and returned to Ireland to preach the Gospel. You can learn more about him on a great post I found here.

Learning about his life had me wonder how St. Patrick's Day was and still is celebrated AS a religious holiday. So, I'm inviting those who celebrate St. Patricks Day as a Holy Day, not just a holiday, to share their ideas, traditions, crafts and reflections on St. Patricks Day. Didn't know I even carried coasters? Well, I never really announced them, and up until today I had only added the apple design. Many of my other designs I didn't think looked as spiffy with the fading that comes from printing on sandstone (I gather). Plus, $10 seemed like a lot for a single coaster when I already sold tile coasters through my CafePress shop for $5. But since these are being marked down to the same I've added some clover designs (which look alright faded, I think)...these should show up in my shop within the hour.

Where Art Meets Math...

A friend shared this amazing video with me recently....

Isn't that cool? The artist who made that, Vi Hart - Mathemusician, has more amazing videos here.

I showed that to the kids (ages 6, and 7...my 2 year old was napping). They were ready to bail on it at first but then she started drawing and they were hooked. After it was finished they wanted to try it too. So did I!

Here's what I drew...

(You wouldn't believe how hard it is to try to make
hearts in different sizes all the exact same shape...
Just makes me even more impressed that the
Mathemusician can do that with ELEPHANTS!)

And here's what my 6 year old drew...

My 7 year old drew some too, but he drew them on dark blue construction paper in pencil, and it doesn't photograph well. Plus he's not finished.

Really enjoyed this and plan to do more! You know, when I was a teen I thought of myself as a "creative person" (still do), and saw math and science as the polar opposite to that. But over the years I've learned that it isn't. Math and science can be useful tools to help you express your creativity.

More Than All These Things....

I've been exploring One World One Heart...and enjoying meeting bloggers from around the world, and seeing some much beautiful art along the way.

But one line in from one of the blogs I visited, In The Light, struck more deeply....

She said, "I'm a freelance writer, occasional speaker, and now and then painter with a growing interest in photography. But God has my heart more than all these things."

But God has my heart more than all these things...

I wish I could say that. That I'm an artist, writer, mother, wife...but that God has my heart more than all these things. But in truth so many things even more trivial than those things have my heart more than God.

I pray that God will change my heart so that is it His...more than all these things.

I'm a "Texifornian". Yes, I made up that word...though I'm not the only one who ever thought of it. I am originally from California, USA, but live in Texas now. If you'ld like a postcard from Texas, I'm giving that away for OWOH on my other blog, Texifornia. Oh, and one more interesting thing I thought I'd add...when I was a kid I lived on a boat! Yep, until I was 10, then we moved to the California mountains. If you happen to have seen a 50 foot yellow tug boat named SNAFU (it used to be a Navy boat...my parents didn't name it that) chugging around let me know. I'd love to find out what happened to it. :-)

My dad has Parkinsons, and the shaking has gotten so bad that he can't even read anymore...even with a book-stand it's just too hard. Since he's always been an avid reader, I wanted to get him some books on tape. Maybe you all can help me with suggestions:

Do you know of any good books in the following genres: westerns, historical fiction, mystery, suspense, documentary?
What is your favorite way to enjoy a good book: regular paper book, audio book, kindle or other type of reader?

(as if drinking the water might get you pregnant). So, I made this shirt with those comments in mind.

How did I know? Well, I was checking my January stats and it was all pretty much a straight line, with about 1 to 10 people visiting each day, except for one odd spike in the middle. On January 9th, when I wasn't even here and hadn't done ANYTHING to promote Scribbleprints, it suddenly spikes to over 100. I look at my stats and most of those were either direct hits or hits coming from mail servers, so I'm guessing someone forwarded my site! How cool!

When Art Meets Science

I just love when art meets science. Last month we got to introduce our kids to one of my favorite artsy science experiments.

It's fun and fairly simple. You will need:

A shallow pan or bowl
Milk
Food coloring
Dish soap

Fill the pan with milk. Drop several drops of different colored food coloring in different places in the milk. Then, squirt a small drop of dish soap in the middle of the dish soap. The colors will start to swirl as the dish soap reacts to the protein in the milk. Like this...

Isn't that cool! Of course, if you want to keep this "art" then you'll have to take some pictures like we did. I love how this also caught the reflection of the lights above our table. Pretty cool! It would be cool to video too, though we didn't do that this time.

LESSON IN COLORS
Use red, yellow, and blue food coloring to help teach younger children what colors are created when those colors mix.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
I found this description of what causes the colors to swirl on About.com:

"The detergent lowers the surface tension of the liquid so that the food coloring is free to flow throughout the milk. The detergent reacts with the protein in the milk, altering the shape of those molecules and setting them in motion."

Aloha Friday

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday, where I ask a simple question for you to answer in the comments (if you want to).

My son recently blew me away when he showed me some artwork he had done. They were Scribbleprints, like mine, only with his own flair! I was really touched...and impressed. Not that what I do is that hard...but for a 7 year old, they were really good, and I thought it was sweet that he wanted to do something like me.

Here's one he did...

He was imitating my cross in the magnet holding it...

He said he was trying to get it like mine...but I actually like

the way it's different then the one I drew. How his is more symmetrical, but not completely.

And I loved his other scribbleprints which were less imitations and let his originality shine through.

So, here's today's questions:

What's the sweetest way your child has imitated you?

My Son's Scribbleprints

There are some things your kids will do that will just melt your heart.

This is one of them.

Remind you of anything? My seven year old is making Scribbleprints!

No prompting...he decided to do this all on his own.

We thought the one above looked like a clover, and we got

to talk about discovering pictures in the scribbles. :-)

This one he patterned after my Cross design (which is on a magnet up

in the corner). I think his cross is beautiful! If you look in the pattern you can

make out his original scribble and see how he filled in areas on the side, and I

like the types of patterns this made. This one might have to go straight from the fridge to a frame.

This picture is 100% his own creation. I think his snail is precious and love

how he made Scribbleprint letters with it too!

I guess you could say this proves even a child can do Scribbleprints...but, I already knew that. There are things you do you want your child imitating and things you don't. My son imitating my art makes my heart smile. I know as he continues to draw and paint and craft he'll come up with his own style and niche that is just his, and I look forward to seeing that develop. But for now I feel proud to know he likes the art I do enough to try it for himself.

Magic Marker Monday

I hadn't shown off my kids art here in quite a while....so long in fact that one or two pieces just won't do. They just brought home a bunch of really neat fall art from school, so I had to share the whole fridge-full!

Love all those pumpkins and leaves and bright colors!

Here's a close up of the scarecrow my 7 year old did.

And heres some fun farm animals! My seven year old made the chicken, and was really proud of the shading he did (and with good reason, I think!). The pig is by my 6 year old. Notice the popsicle sticks for the fence! He's always loved using three dimensional stuff. For the longest time he had no interest in drawing, but if you brought out dried spaghetti or yarn he loved to make pictures with those. Since Kindergarten he's started to enjoy drawing more, but those popsicle sticks make me smile because that's just so HIM.

That's actually only HALF the art on my fridge. I'll share the rest soon!

For a long time now I've had oval and circle shaped ornaments at my CafePress Shops...but some of you will remember when I had heart and star shaped ornaments through my ArtsNow shop. When I closed that shop down (for various reasons) those ornaments were the hardest thing to lose.

Well, now Zazzle has them! They do cost more than the ones currently at my CafePress shop, but they come in more shapes (not only heart and star, but metal cirlces and squares and a t-shirt shape, which I have yet to try but am thinking of some designs for). Unlike my CafePress ornaments these can be customized, and have front and back printing. That means that you can put a picture or personal message on the front or back!

TIP: Designs with printing on the back cost a few dollars more, so if you don't care about back printing and want to save a little you can remove the design from the back using the customization tool. For un-customized circle and oval ornaments, you can get a better price at my CafePres Shop.

Music That Moves Me

A funny thing happened last week. The blogger over at Xmas dolly invited me to join in on her meme, Monday Music Moves me, which happened to have a country theme. The first thing I thought of was this funny Texas song that I had just been waiting for an excuse to share on my other blog, Texifornia. But in stead of clicking on Texifornia when I posted it, I clicked on Scribbleprints, and accidentlally posted it here...I even copied the link and shared it on the meme before I realized I'd put it in the wrong place. So I went back and fixed things, and deleted it here, but because the original link on Monday Music Meme could only be taken down by the blogger, people were coming here looking for it for a while before it was taken down.

That's all taken care of, but it got me thinking of some beautiful country songs I love that I WOULD like to share with you all here. So, I'm going to do a Music Post here after all.

The first song I'd like to share is "You Say It Best When You Say Nothing At All" sung by Alison Krauss. I'm a bit of a country fan. My husband is NOT. But, regardless, when we were dating every time this song came on the radio I'd have to stop whatever I was doing and listen to it, because it made me think of him.

Though it isn't one I relate to as much as the first, I love the mournful beauty of the next song by Trisha Yearwood.
